The whales have arrived! A spectacular natural wonder, captured by the crew on Big Fury

The Whitsunday Islands are among the most popular tourist destinations in Australia; with crystal-clear waters, pristine beaches, and an abundance of marine life. Every year, the Whitsundays offer another incredible natural wonder as humpback whales arrive to breed and nurse their young.

A few weeks ago, the guests on board Big Fury were lucky enough to witness one of the most magical experiences ever: watching a breaching display from one of the migrating humpback whales.

The migration
Humpback whales are known for their incredible annual migration along the east coast of Australia. Humpback whales leave their Antarctica feeding grounds to return to the warmer waters of the Great Barrier Reef. During this 5,000 km journey, the whales take part in feeding, socialising, and, most importantly, breeding.

The Whitsunday season
From June through September, the Whitsunday waters serve as a unique breeding ground and nursery for humpback whales. During this time, visitors can witness the incredible natural wonder of these majestic mammals as they nurse their young and teach them to swim.

Best time to See the whales
The best time to catch a glimpse of these magnificent creatures is during their migration season from June to September.

If you are lucky enough to visit our beautiful region during whale season, the best way to see them is by boat! Magnums has a wide range of options from day boats, overnight sailing trips, jet ski tours etc… We certainly cannot guarantee that whales will be seen on each of the tours, but if you are on the water around the Whitsunday Islands between June and September, there are good chances that a whale or two will be seen. Just make sure you have your phone ready!

Big Fury is a great option to discover the Whitsunday Islands. Magnums can book this tour for you easily as it departs Airlie Beach daily.

"I thoroughly enjoyed all of it - it was the perfect amount of time at each spot: the lookout, snorkelling and beach time. Not a dull moment the entire day! Even though the weather was not on our side, the boat ride was still fun and the crew were great. It was so good to see them having as much fun as us."
